Your guide to unforgettable hikes, hidden beaches,
and why Whitefish is the perfect home base
Glacier National Park is one of the most stunning places in the United States, with snow-capped peaks, crystal-clear lakes, abundant wildlife, and over 700 miles of hiking trails. Summer is when it truly shines, offering long daylight hours and easier access to the park’s famous scenic routes.
If you’re staying in Whitefish, Montana, you’re already one step ahead. It’s a charming mountain town just a short drive from the park, and a perfect base for exploring everything Glacier has to offer.
Know Before You Go
Before heading out, take a minute to plan:
- Vehicle Reservations: Most entrances require timed vehicle reservations in the summer. You can book them online at nps.gov.
- Late Entry Tip: After 3 p.m., no reservation is needed. With Montana’s late sunsets (past 10 p.m. in July), you’ll still have plenty of time to explore.
Pack Smart: Bring layers, plenty of water, sunscreen, and bear spray. Cell service is spotty, so download offline maps ahead of time.

Must-See Glacier Highlights
There’s no shortage of beautiful places to see in Glacier. These are some of the local favorites that strike a great balance between accessible and breathtaking.
Avalanche Lake
This family-friendly hike starts from the Trail of the Cedars and winds through old-growth forest to a clear blue alpine lake. At around 4.5 miles round-trip with minimal elevation gain, it’s ideal for all ages.
Hidden Lake Overlook (and Beyond)
Starting at Logan Pass, this popular trail takes you to a viewpoint overlooking Hidden Lake. It’s about 3 miles round-trip. If you’re up for more, continue down to the lake itself. It’s roughly 5 miles total, with more elevation—but far fewer crowds and plenty of chances to spot mountain goats.
St. Mary and Virginia Falls
This is an easy, mostly flat 2-mile hike (each way) with two beautiful waterfalls along the way. It’s also one of the best places in the park to cool off with a swim.
Wild Goose Island & Secret Beach
There are many special places in Glacier National Park that are off the beaten path. These include some incredible swimming spots, lesser known hiking trails, hidden beaches and impressive fishing opportunities that even most locals don’t know about. Off the Beaten Path
These spots are a little quieter but every bit as stunning.
Polebridge & Bowman Lake
Remote and peaceful, this area is reached by dirt roads but is well worth the effort. Grab a treat from the Polebridge Mercantile, then head to Bowman Lake for canoeing, hiking, or just soaking in the view.
Belton Bridge
Located near West Glacier, this historic bridge offers one of the best local swimming holes. It’s also a favorite for bridge jumping if you’re feeling brave.
Many Glacier
This area is known as the heart of the park for good reason. It has some of the best hikes—like Grinnell Glacier and Iceberg Lake—but due to road work, you’ll need to take a shuttle part of the way this summer.

Make a Splash: Boating, Swimming, and Floating
On warm days, nothing beats getting on the water.
Red Rock Point and McDonald Creek
Great spots to swim, float, or even cliff jump.
Apgar Village
Rent kayaks and float the lower McDonald Creek. It’s gentle enough for kids and incredibly scenic.
Whitefish Lake
Stay closer to town and enjoy sandy beaches, paddleboarding, or renting a boat from the Whitefish Lake Lodge Marina.

Stay and Play in Whitefish
After a full day exploring Glacier, Whitefish is the kind of town you’ll want to come home to.
From zip lines and alpine slides at Whitefish Mountain Resort to charming downtown shops and restaurants, there’s plenty to do when you’re not in the park. The resort area also offers gondola rides, wild huckleberry picking, and mountain biking—all just minutes from your rental.
